Lamers perfect in Wolves' 8-1 win over Lions

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Mars Hill Lions on Saturday afternoon a the Cannon Tennis Courts, led by a perfect day by freshman Tara Lamers, who did not surrender a single game in singles or doubles play.

The Wolves (12-8, 5-3 SAC) led the Lions (1-9, 1-4 SAC) 3-0 early after doubles play as juniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) edged Tatiana Dualiby and Marian Pinate 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

The second doubles point came at No. 2 as Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and junior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) cruised to an 8-0 win over Alison Fridley and Aly Jones. Newberry's No. 3 doubles pair of juniors Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janiero , Brazil) and Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) edged Anna Rickenbacker and Natalie Hilbig 8-4 to wrap up the doubles sweep for Newberry.

Singles play saw Aguirre battle to a three set win over Dualiby at No. 1, while Adum edged Rickenbacker in a tight first set before shutting out Rickenbacker in set two at No. 2 singles. Ziehe played to a victory in straight sets at No. 4.

Lamers dominated in her No. 5 singles match as she kept Fridley from winning a single point in a pair of 6-0 set victories. McManus wrapped up the match for the Wolves with a two-set win over Hilbig at No. 6.

Newberry travels to Tusculum tomorrow for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Tusculum Pioneers in the final SAC match of the year for the Wolves.
