NEWBERRY - It came down very last match to decide the team result as the Newberry women's tennis team fell to the Catawba Lady Indians 5-4 at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Wednesday.
Newberry (11-8, 4-3 SAC) found itself in a hole early earning only one doubles points against Catawba (13-8, 3-4) as No. 1 pairing of juniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) notched an 8-4 win over Liz Renteria and Sloan Kessler.
Adum carried momentum out of her doubles match into her singles match against Kessler, knocking off her foe in straight sets at No. 2 singles. Wolves' junior Ariel Strong tied the team match 2-2 as she earned a two-set victory at No. 3 singles.
After the Wolves dropped a point at No. 1 singles, Newberry regained the lead as freshman Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) earned a dominant two-set victory as she blanked Olivia Myers at No. 5. No. 6 singles saw junior Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) battle back from a set down, but the Wolves' saw Catawba tie the match at 4-4 as McManus dropped set three.
Junior Marina Ziehe earned a quick set one victory over Ally Prior at No. 4, before Prior bounced back to win a tight second set and earned the victory in three sets to clinch Catawba's 5-4 victory.
Newberry plays its final home conference match on Saturday as the Wolves host Mars Hill at 2 p.m.
