Aguirre, Adum earn doubles win as Wolves fall 5-1 to Wingate in SAC semifinals

ROCK HILL - Despite a valiant effort by the Wolves, the Newberry women's tennis team fell 5-1 to the No. 1-seed Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday morning at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in the semifinals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship.

Newberry (13-12) opened the match, which began on Friday afternoon, with a victory at No. 1 doubles as juniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) earned an 8-6 win over Ali Evers and Becca Thomas

After the match was halted due to problematic weather in the Rock Hill-area following doubles play, the Wolves entered the Saturday morning resumption trailing Wingate 2-1. Newberry earned first set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles from Aguirre and Adum, respectively, but saw the second set of both matches fall to Wingate. By the time the third sets were underway, the Bulldogs had earned victories at No. 4, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to clinch the victory for the No. 49 team in the country.

Aguirre and Adum, First Team All-South Atlantic Conference honorees for doubles play, finished the season with a 21-4 overall record, and a 9-2 record against conference foes.

The Wolves wrap-up the season with a 13-12 record on the season earning the Wolves their second-straight 13 win season.
