ROCK HILL - Junior Susana Aguirre wrapped up the Wolves' 5-2 victory over the No. 4-seed Catawba Lady Indians on Thursday at the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships, pushing the Wolves into the semifinals.
Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and partner junior Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles for the Wolves (14-10), while Newberry also earned an 8-5 win over the Lady Indians (14-9) at No. 3 doubles with juniors Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) earning the win.
After dropping No. 2 doubles, the Wolves picked up a third team point at No. 2 singles as Adum cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sloan Kessler of Catawba. Wolves freshman Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) didn't drop a single game as she toppled Olivia Myers at No. 5 singles.
Aguirre fell in set one to Liz Renteria, before bouncing back for a 6-1 victory in set two. With Newberry sitting on a 4-2 lead, the Wolves' No. 1 notched a 6-2 victory in the third set to clinch the Wolves ticket to the tournament semifinals.
Newberry will play No. 1-seed Wingate tomorrow at noon, with the match to be played at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
