BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry women's tennis team traveled to Brevard and brought an 8-1 win back to Newberry with them as the Wolves were nearly perfect at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Doubles play was a success for the Wolves (11-7, 4-2 SAC) as juniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) cruised to an 8-1 win over Claire Dillman and Michelle Prata at No. 1 doubles.
No. 2 saw another dominant Newberry win as freshman Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and junior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) topped Katie Ouellette and Elise Labus 8-2. The Wolves earned a victory at No. 3 doubles thanks to a default by the Tornados (2-9, 0-3 SAC).
Singles play saw Adum surrender only one game at No. 2 as she topped Prata, while at No. 3 it was Strong who earned a straight sets victory over Ouellette. No. 4 and No. 5 singles resulted in two-set victories for junior Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and Lamers, respectively, before junior Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) received a victory via default at No. 6.
Newberry returns home on April 3 as the Wolves play host to the Catawba Lady Indians at 2 p.m.
