NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 sweep over the visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on Monday afternoon at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
Newberry (10-7, 3-2 SAC) quickly worked their way through doubles play as the Bears (0-7, 0-6 SAC) were able to only win two games in three matches. At No. 1 doubles juniors Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) rolled over Kelsey Love and Ivey Tant in an 8-0 victory.
No. 2 doubles saw freshman Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and junior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) knocked off Meaghan Liner and Amanda Bryan 8-1, while at No. 3 juniors Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earned a victory over Lacey Lapp and Maggie Brown by an 8-1 advantage.
Singles play also saw Newberry outdo its opponents as Aguirre opened things up with a two-set win over Love at No. 1. Adum followed in her doubles partner's footsteps as she dropped only one game against Tant.
Strong saw the toughest competition winning a tight second set to defeat Lapp at No. 3 singles. Ziehe also earned a win in two sets, while Lamers won by the largest margin of the day as she finished with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bryan. Newberry completed the 9-0 sweep as McManus defeated Maggie Brown in straight sets at No. 6.
Newberry is scheduled to travel to Brevard on Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a South Atlantic Conference meeting.
