Wolves sweep singles play in 8-1 win over Lady Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry women's tennis team wrapped up its trip to Tennessee on Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 victory at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex against the Lady Eagles.

Newberry (9-7, 2-2 SAC) opened the day with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles as juniors Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) knocked off Patricia Guerreiro and Stefy Stand. The Wolves picked up a second team point from Carson-Newman (4-8, 0-5) as juniors Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) notched a 9-7 victory over Brooke Sanderson and Megan Wilson.

With a 2-1 lead heading into singles action the Wolves left the Lady Eagles with no chance to come back as Newberry swept Carson-Newman in singles play.

The Wolves' first singles point came at No. 3 where junior Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) earned one of Newberry's five two-set victories against Carson-Newman. Next it was Adum, who earned her victory in straight sets at No. 2 singles. The Wolves clinched the match as a team when Aguirre came back from a set down to defeat Stand in three sets at No. 1.

At No. 4 singles, Ziehe dropped only three games as she notched a two-set win over Jennifer Ott. Freshman Tara Lamers (Maastricht, The Netherlands) earned a victory over Sanderson at No. 5 singles, before McManus completed the Newberry singles sweep with a two-set win over Tiffany Delias.

Newberry is scheduled to return to the Cannon Tennis Courts on the campus of Newberry College on Monday for a 2 p.m. conference meeting with the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears.
