Wolves take series opener at Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-1

Box Score

HICKORY, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves followed a strong pitching performance, while two of the South Atlantic Conference's hottest hitters kept going strong as the scarlet and gray took a 6-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne in the opening game of a three-game SAC set at Bears Field on Friday.

Newberry is now 18-13 overall and 8-6 in the SAC, while Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 11-21 overall and 5-11 in the league. The two sides are slated to meet up for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) moved to 6-0 on the season, allowing no runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings, dropping his ERA to 1.70 on the season. In relief, Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.) and Will Robbins (Edgemoor, S.C.) each pitched a solid inning with three strikeouts apiece, while only one L-R run came home.

At the plate, Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Bradley Nichols (Winter Springs, Fla.) each went 3-for-5 in the game, while Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) was 2-for-3 with a walk.

Neither team's offense got going early, and it was the Wolves who crossed the plate first after Baur led off the fourth with a double. Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) plated him with a sacrifice fly to give Newberry a 1-0 lead.

The Wolves pushed their lead to 3-0 in the fifth on Camp's run-scoring triple and a sacrifice fly by Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.). Newberry tacked three runs onto the lead in the eighth inning, as two runs scored when Zach Morgan (Greenville, S.C.) reached on an error and Camp plated Morgan with an RBI single.
