GAFFNEY - The Newberry women's tennis team was edged in a close match 5-4 by the Limestone Saints at the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Newberry (7-7) looked to take the momentum heading into singles action as the Wolves took two doubles points from the Saints (8-6). At No. 3 doubles, juniors Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) picked up an 8-3 win over Lauren Bolender and Ariel Svantesson.
The Wolves' No. 1 doubles team, ranked No. 6 in the Southeast Region, of juniors Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) earned a close 8-6 win over Paige Palinkas and Jessica Reyes Varela.
Singles action did not turn out how the Wolves had planned, as only two points were found by the Newberry women. The Wolves' first singles point came as Adum earned her third straight singles victory as she topped Reyes Varela in two sets.
Newberry's final team point came as McManus battled from down a set to earn a three set victory over Svantesson at No. 6 singles.
The Wolves head to Tennessee this weekend, as Newberry plays Lincoln Memorial on Friday, before heading to Carson-Newman on Saturday morning.
