Connelly earns first career win as Wolves top Tigers 9-0

COLUMBIA - For the third time this season, the Newberry women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 victory over an opponent as the Wolves topped Benedict 9-0 at Southeast Park in Columbia.

Newberry (3-3) dominated the Tigers (0-2) in doubles action as the Wolves dropped only two games throughout the three doubles matches. Newberry's toughest doubles match took place at No. 3 doubles where junior Shannon McManus and senior Sierra Hoover earned an 8-2 win.

The Wolves earned a pair of 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as juniors Susana Aguirre and Romina Adum knocked off Jessica Carswell and Glory Zhou at No. 1, while junior Ariel Strong and freshman Tara Lamers picked up a win at No. 2 over Belinda Camacho and Chloe Jean-Charles.

Singles action proved to be fully in Newberry's favor as well as the Wolves breezed through the Benedict lineup. The most dominant victory came at No. 1 as Aguirre earned a pair of 6-0 set victories to knock off Zhou. Adum dropped only one game in a straight set victory over Jean-Charles at No. 2.

At No. 3 singles Strong toppled Camacho in two sets, while Lamers knocked off Carswell at No. 4. The final two spots matches saw McManus top Keneisha Whittington in two sets before sophomore Christine Connelly earned her first collegiate victory over Darnel Howlett.

Newberry next sees action at home on Wednesday at 2 p.m. when the Wolves host No. 30 (No. 5 in the Southeast Region) Wingate.
