Aguirre earns win over regionally ranked opponent as Wolves fall 5-4 to Anderson

NEWBERRY - An upset was just out of reach for the Newberry women's tennis team as the Wolves fell 5-4 to No. 49 Anderson at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon.

The Wolves (2-3, 0-1 SAC) earned a pair of doubles victories to start the match off with a couple of team points. Newberry picked up a win at No. 1 doubles over Anderson (3-1, 2-0 SAC) with an 8-5 score as juniors Susana Aguirre and Romina Adum toppled Karen Ching and Alexandra Ebner.

Newberry's second doubles point came at No. 2 where freshman Tara Lamers and junior Ariel Strong picked up an 8-4 victory over Hannah Ecleberry and Lindsay Gregory.

Singles play saw Aguirre earn a big victory as she topped Ching, who is ranked No. 16 in the Southeast Region, 6-1, 6-1. Newberry's final point came at No. 3 singles where Strong picked up a two-set victory after battling for a victory in a tight first set over Ebner.

The Wolves travel to Gaffney on February 23, for a 10 a.m. meeting with the Limestone Saints.
