NEWBERRY - After conceding a forfeit in the opening bout of the night, the fifth-ranked Newberry Wolves took the next nine bouts in a row to cruise to a 45-6 win over the Anderson Trojans in Eleazer Arena on Wednesday evening.
With the victory, Newberry finishes the regular season with a 19-2 dual record. The Super Region I tournament takes place on February 22-23 in Kutztown, Pa., with the top four placers in each weight class advancing to the national tournament in Birmingham on March 8-9.
The Wolves conceded the points in the 125 lbs. bout to fall behind 6-0 before Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) cruised to a dominant 21-5 win by technical fall over Keenan Simmons at 133 lbs. to cut the gap to 6-5.
At 141 lbs., No. 8 B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) pinned Eric DeAngelis at the 1:30 mark to give Newberry the lead and pick up his 100th career victory in the scarlet and gray.
No. 7 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) earned his 135th career win with a 3:33 pin of Ian Harper at 149 lbs., pushing the lead to 17-6. Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) worked his way to a 4-3 decision over Kevin Johnson at 157 lbs.
At the halfway point of the dual, the program recognized the Wolves' four seniors after presenting 125-pounder Jeff Vesta (Manhattan, Kan.) with a plaque for acheiving his 100th collegiate win in the dual over King on January 30.
Deral Brown, Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.), Chase Gamble (Dallas, N.C.) and Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) were presented with posters commemorating their many contributions to the program's success.
The dual resumed at 165 lbs., with Davis Bagwell (Birmingham, Ala.) earning a 7-2 decision over Jamal Lackey to make it a 23-6 dual lead.
The Wolves claimed bonus points in the final four bouts, starting with a pin by Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) over Jake Allen at the 1:58 mark of the 174 lbs. match. Mitch Brown needed just seven seconds of action in the second period to pin Zack Farmer at 184 lbs. Braden Carter (Christiansburg, Va.) won the 197 lbs. bout by forfeit.
Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) cruised to a 22-9 major decision over Bryan Glace at heavyweight to close out a dominant dual and a dominant season for the Wolves.
