Pearson pushes Wolves over the top in 62-58 victory over Tornados

BREVARD, N.C. - For the fourth game in a row the trio of junior Haylee Lepaio, junior Samantha Creed and senior Tasia Holdorf each notched double-digits in scoring as the Wolves snuck out of Boshamer Gymnasium with a 62-58 victory over the Brevard Tornados.

Newberry (3-1, 1-1 SAC) opened the afternoon up with a quick run that saw the Wolves jump out in front of the Tornados (0-3, 0-2 SAC) 5-2. After a layup from Holdorf (Anchorage, Alaska) the home side not only knotted things up with a 3-pointer from Taylor Hiatt the Tornados found themselves up by six with a 13-7 lead and 11 minutes on the clock after a jumper from Madison Lenox.

The Wolves kept themselves in the game as the two teams exchanged leads over the final ten minutes of the opening period. Brevard leapt out to a four-point lead on a Katie Williams 3-point make with 2:18 left, Newberry answered quickly as Creed (Montmorency, Victoria, Australia) scored on back-to-back possessions to tie up the game at 27-27 heading into halftime.

The first half was a close one for both sides as the lead changed hands five times, with the score evening out six times in the first 20 minutes.

Brevard opened the scoring in the second period before the teams continued the seesaw battle until Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) hit a jumper with 14:51 on the clock, to give Newberry a lead it would hold over the next 13 minutes.

The 13-minute stretch of Newberry success reached a high mark as Creed and Lepaio combined for nine points to put the Wolves ahead by 10 points with 6:13 remaining. Creed pushed the Wolves to the double-digit mark as she hit a 3-pointer to put Newberry up 51-41.

Creed's 3-point make was followed up a little over a minute later when Williams hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to seven. Williams quickly converted a pair of free throws and another 3-point make to pull the Tornados within two of the Wolves. Brevard continued to battle back tying the game at 54-54 with 1:08 remaining after a layup and free throw from Lenox.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from junior Zara Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) pushed the Wolves ahead of the Tornados by six with 14 seconds remaining. A technical foul and personal foul charged to the Wolves with seven seconds remaining gave Brevard four free points from the line. A foul against Lenox allowed Pearson to hit a pair of free throws to put Newberry ahead 62-58 before time expired on Brevard's comeback.

Lepaio and Holdorf led the Wolves with 15 points, while Creed added 13 points of her own. Lepaio and seniors Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) and Devanee Taylor (Chester, Va.) recorded six rebounds each. Gleeson finished the afternoon with five assists, while Creed recorded three steals in the victory.

Newberry outrebounded Brevard 36-26 on the day. The Wolves shot 54.3-percent from the field and 33.3-percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Wolves return home on Tuesday to play host to Catawba with a 5 p.m. scheduled tip-off inside of Eleazer Arena.
