NEWBERRY - As six members of the Newberry men's soccer team were honored for playing their final game in the scarlet and gray, the Wolves were turned away by a 60th minute goal that netted the Tusculum Pioneers a 1-0 victory at the Smith Road Complex.

Neither team was able to threaten early in the match as the two teams combined for only six shots on goal. Newberry (1-16-1, 1-9-1 SAC) looked to have the games first tally in the 40th minute when a shot from sophomore Mario Stojkoski (Skopje, Macedonia) saw his shot rattle on the underside of the crossbar. Stojkoski's shot bounced straight down, but did not break the goal line.

Stojkoski's shot was followed up by a hard shot from junior Nick Rembowski (Mooresville, N.C.), which deflected off the stomach of a Tusculum (6-10, 3-8 SAC) defender and was cleared out by the Pioneers.

The second period saw the Pioneers score on one of their first offensive opportunities of the half. In the 60th minute, Jonathan Spicher corralled a pass from Roberto Pimentel and saw his shot squirt inside the near post for the lone goal of the match.

Both teams fired shots following the Spicher strike, but were unable to find the back of the net as time expired on the 1-0 Pioneers victory.

Stojkoski and sophomore Anthony Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) led the Wolves with two shots each. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) finished the match with seven saves.

Prior to the match six seniors were honored as part of the soccer programs' senior day. Jay Barajas (Atlanta, Ga.), Brady Francis (Aiken, S.C.), Christian Ortiz (Atlanta, Ga.), Joseph Santos (Charleston, S.C.), Gregory Stone (West Columbia, S.C.) and Sweatt all wrapped up their Newberry careers on Saturday afternoon.
