Box Score

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves cruised through Friday's match with the Catawba Indians, earning a 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 sweep on a night where the program's three seniors were honored.

Newberry moves to 18-10 overall and 12-9 in the South Atlantic Conference entering Saturday's 11 a.m. regular season finale against Queens. Catawba falls to 4-19 and 4-17 in the league.

Lisa Ross (Bowling Green, Ky.), Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) and Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) were honored in a special ceremony prior to the match to celebrate their years of dedication to the program.

The celebratory air carried over into the match, as Newberry hit .407 in the first set to cruise to a victory, making only three hitting errors in the set. Alexus Horton (Austin, Texas) was a perfect 5-for-5 swinging in the frame, while Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) also had three errorless kills.

In the second set, Newberry opened up a huge lead early thanks to six straight points on the serve of Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas). Newberry was up 22-13 when Catawba staged a comeback, but a Parrish kill put away the set with plenty of room to spare. The Wolves hit a smoking .462 in the set while limiting the guests to a .097 rate.

The third set was the closest of the night, but the Wolves pulled away late. Newberry held a slight 17-16 lead before scoring three straight points with a kill and a solo block from Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.). Horton had a pair of kills to force Catawba's final timeout and put down two more points late as the Wolves finished the quick match off.

Horton led all players with 10 kills on a .467 hitting percentage with three blocks. Hayward hit .583 with eight kills and only one error. Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had a match-high 11 digs, while Ross had 10. Mayor and Moran each passed out 20 assists.
