Jonas' double helps Wolves to 4-1 victory over Trojans

Box Score

ANDERSON - Defenders led the way for the Newberry women's soccer team as the Wolves topped Anderson 4-1 on a pair of goals from Rachael Jonas and a single goal from both Kelly Cardew and Gabrielle Brodie.

The two teams felt each other out early in the match as the Trojans (2-5-1, 1-1-4 SAC) and Wolves (6-4, 4-2 SAC) exchanged 11 shots in the opening 40 minutes. It was in the 41st minute that Newberry finally pushed a shot by Anderson goalkeeper Sadie Lancaster. Lancaster was beat by Jonas (Camarillo, Calif.), as the junior sent a shot over the keepers head from 40 yards out.
Jonas' goal was the first of her career and gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The first half saw the Wolves outshot 7-6, while the teams were even 1-1 on corner kicks.

The second period started slowly, but became action packed soon after the 65th minute. With Newberry up 1-0 heading into the 67th minute, Newberry looked to add an insurance goal as junior Sabrina Serafin (Northridge, Calif.) found the feet of Newberry junior Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand). With the ball at her feet, Brodie sent a shot over Lancaster's head from the top of the penalty area for her third goal of the season.

The Wolves struck again a minute later as Jonas scored off an assist from junior Sarah Sager to put Newberry ahead of the home side 3-1.

Brodie's insurance goal proved the game winner for the Wolves as Helena Moore scored for Anderson in the 70th minute, only two minutes after Jonas completed the brace.

The 85th minute saw freshman Lindsay Huber (Selden, N.Y.) delver a corner kick to fellow freshman Cardew (Spartanburg, S.C.), who struck for the first goal of her collegiate career.

Cardew's goal secured Newberry's 4-1 win over the Trojans, marking the most goals in a game by Newberry since the Wolves earned a 4-2 victory over Erskine on October 22, 2012.

Newberry was outshot 15-13 by the Trojans, while Anderson also out earned the Wolves 5-4 on corner kicks.

Individually, Newberry's sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Darley posted five saves in the victory. Jonas' brace is the first multi-goal game of the year for Newberry, as the Wolves last saw a muti-goal performance in last year's win over Erskine as Brodie netted a pair of goals.

Jonas' goals mark the first points of her Newberry career, while Huber, Cardew and Serafin also earned the first points of their careers. Brodie's third goal of the season gives her 18 in her career, which is good for fifth all-time at Newberry.

The Wolves continue a short span of road matches on Saturday as Newberry travels to Carson-Newman for a 5 p.m. match with the Lady Eagles.
