Wolves swept on the road at Anderson

ANDERSON - The Newberry Wolves got off to a tough start and never recovered, losing a South Atlantic Conference match at Anderson in straight sets (15-25, 21-25, 20-25) in AU's Abney Center on Tuesday.

Newberry falls to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in SAC play entering this weekend's road trip at Catawba and Queens. Anderson is now 6-7 and 5-3 in the league.

The Wolves faced an uphill battle from the very beginning in the first set, conceding the first eight points to the Trojans, with seven points coming on Newberry errors. Newberry hit minus-.088 in the set and Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) had two kills as the only player with multiple kills in the set.

The Wolves fell behind near the start of the second set, with errors shaking the team's performance. The Wolves were able to right the ship and get as close as 21-19 late, but the Trojans scored four of the final six points to earn the win in the second set. Newberry hit .194, with minimal errors down the stretch. Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) had three kills in the set.

The Wolves had a stronger start in the third set and were tied at 15-all before the Trojans went on a 4-0 run and held on to the lead for the rest of the set. Newberry hit .095 in the set and Hayward had a team-high three kills in the set and libero Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) was excellent in the back row with 11 digs.

For the match, Hayward hit .200 with seven kills and Soper had six kills. Stokes led all players with 18 digs, while Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) passed out 17 assists.
