Wolves down LMU in five sets to sweep Tennessee road swing

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves followed a trio of strong hitting performances and a powerful fifth set to earn a tight win at Lincoln Memorial (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-7) in the Mary Mars Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry is now 13-8 overall and 8-7 in the South Atlantic Conference and returns home next week. The Wolves host Lenoir-Rhyne next Friday and welcome Brevard and GRU Augusta on Saturday. LMU is now 14-9 overall and 10-5 in the league.

Holly Brisson (Lumberton, N.C.) led Newberry with 16 kills, while Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) had a double-double with 15 kills and 21 digs. Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit .385 with 13 kills and Alexus Horton (Austin, Texas) hit .316 with nine kills and was in on six blocks.

Libero Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had a team-high 24 digs, while Newberry's setters combined to pass out 58 assists. Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) had a double-double with 36 assists and 13 digs and Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) had 20 assists. Lisa Ross (Bowling Green, Ky.) had 14 digs as well as four aces.

"Today we passed the ball on serve receive extremely well, and that's a credit to Samantha Parrish, Elayni Stokes and Lisa Ross. I challenged them after last night that we have to pass better, and that was one of our better passing matches of the season," said head coach Todd Hay. "The last three sets saw our setters run the offense well and that pushed us to the win.

"It was also great to see Elayni lead us in digs and also have Sam above 20 digs. That's a great job by them. Offensively, we were led by our middles in terms of percentage, but today was also a great match for Holly Brisson. It was a great weekend for Newberry volleyball to win these two on the road. This team definitely has heart and is just finding ways to win now."

Newberry came back from an early deficit to take the opening set. The Wolves hit .333 in the set and put up five blocks to take the opening frame. Brisson, King and Parrish each had four kills in the set, while Stokes had 10 digs.

The second set was tied as late as 21-all, but the Railsplitters scored four of the final five points to even up the match. Newberry hit only .054 in the set, though Parrish had five kills.

The third set was even tighter, tied at 23-all before Newberry put away the final two points. King had five errorless kills in the set and the Wolves put up 3.5 blocks. The fourth set was all LMU as Newberry hit .000 and the hosts hit .346 and nobody in scarlet and gray had more than two kills.

A huge Newberry run gave the Wolves the deciding set in a runaway. After a 3-all tie, Newberry pushed the lead to 10-4 on a Mayor ace and cruised to the win. Newberry hit .379 in the set.
