Wolves come back to take road win at Carson-Newman in five sets

Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves came back from a set down to force a fifth set, then fought off a match point before taking a 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 16-14) win from the Carson-Newman Eagles in Holt Fieldhouse on Friday night.

The win is Newberry's second straight come-from-behind five-set win over Carson-Newman and moves the Wolves to 12-8 overall and 7-7 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Wolves head to Lincoln Memorial for a 2 p.m. match Saturday. C-N falls to 9-12 overall and 4-10 in the league.

Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) was a leader for the Wolves with 14 kills, 23 digs and a block. Holly Brisson (Lumberton, N.C.) had 11 kills, while Alexus Horton (Austin, Texas) hit .368 with nine kills and five blocks.

Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) had nine kills, Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) put down eight kills and Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) had seven kills.

Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) led the Wolves with 25 digs and the duo of Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) and Chelsea Moran (Sugar Land, Texas) passed out 25 and 22 assists respectively.

"I'm really proud of the girls' effort. They stuck together and worked hard tonight to get that win," said head coach Todd Hay. "It was not a very pretty match on either side. Both teams would look really good at times and then struggle at other times. We just happened to be the team that played the best at the very end with some key blocks. We just simply found a way to win."

"Alexus Horton and Holly Brisson really stood out on offense tonight, and it gave the girls a great lift to have Samantha Parrish back to the level she wants to play at after missing some time."

Newberry was on fire offensively in the opening set, committing only two hitting errors and earning three service aces. The Wolves hit .300 and were led by three kills each from Brisson and King. Horton had two kills and three blocks in the frame.

The Eagles came back and took the second set in the late stages. After being tied at 19-all, Carson-Newman went on to score six of the final eight points in the set. Horton had four errorless kills in the set but the Wolves hit .000 in the set.

Carson-Newman took a big lead in the third set at 19-9. Newberry battled back with a huge surge getting back to within 22-20 before C-N scored the final three points to take a two sets to one lead. Parrish had three kills in the set, but the Wolves were limited to a .050 hitting rate thanks to eight Eagles blocks.

The Wolves followed great hitting on the outside from Hayward and Soper to force the deciding set. Hayward had five kills without an error, while Soper had four errors without a miscue. The set was still tight until the end, tied as late as 18-all. Newberry put away three straight kills to take the lead and an emphatic Parrish kill sent the match to the fifth set.

Parrish had five kills in the fifth set to help bring back Newberry from the brink of a loss. After C-N went up 11-7, Newberry scored four stright points to tie up the set. A 13-all tie forced an Eagle timeout and the hosts put away a kill to sit at match point. Kills from Brisson and King turned the momentum in the Wolves' favor and a C-N error set off the celebration on Newberry's side of the net with the win.
