NEWBERRY - Senior Jay Barajas converted from the penalty spot in the second period as the Wolves fell 4-1 to the visiting Wingate Bulldogs at the Smith Road Complex.

Wingate (9-4, 6-2 SAC) opened the scoring early in the 8th minute as Shaun Gadsby converted off a cross from Gustavo Andrade. Aksel Juul added a second Wingate goal in the 25th minute as he placed a shot on frame which was redirected by a Newberry (1-12-1, 1-6-1 SAC) defender into the back of the net.

The Bulldogs were not done in the opening period as Gadsby finished his brace with a 27th minute finish off a rebounded shot in the 18-yard box.

Newberry was outshot 12-2 in the opening period as the Bulldogs saw the bulk of the possession.

The second period began much the same as Gui Andrade sent a cross into the box that was headed into the back of the net by Peron Da Silva in the 59th minute.

Newberry erased the potential clean sheet for Wingate's Daniel DeGraff as Barajas (Atlanta, Ga.) was pulled down in the penalty area and awarded a spot kick. DeGraff guessed wrong as Barajas buried his shot in the bottom corner of the goal.

The Wolves outshot Wingate 10-5 in the second period, and earned six corner kicks in the half.

Barajas' goal was his second of the season. In goal senior Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) split the afternoon with junior Nicholas Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.). Sweatt and Lucido each recorded a pair of saves.

The Wolves hit the road for the next three matches, first traveling to Coker on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Cobras. The match will mark the first meeting between Newberry and Coker on the soccer pitch since the Cobras joined the South Atlantic Conference.
