JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - For the Newberry women's soccer team and the homestanding Carson-Newman Lady Eagles, 90 minutes was not enough as it took a 102nd minute strike from Newberry junior Sarah Sager, to earn the Wolves' 1-0 win at McCown Field.
The first half was low on action for Newberry (7-4, 5-2 SAC) and Carson-Newman (3-5-2, 2-3-1 SAC) as the two sides combined for only eight shots, one corner kick and 11 fouls. Both sides saw a strong scoring chance turned away by the opponents' goalkeeper.
The first scoring chance came in the fourth minute as the Lady Eagles' Chelsea Jordon saw a shot parried away by sophomore keeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.). The Wolves' lone shot on goal came in the 31st minute when junior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.) was her chance stopped by Carson-Newman's Tiarna McKenna.
The second half looked like it would bring different results than the first half as the Wolves quickly fired off four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second period, including three on frame.
After Newberry's initial onslaught was followed by the Lady Eagles playing firing squad as Carson-Newman took six shots over the next ten minutes. Both keepers had strong showings in the second half as they combined for five saves in the first period, Carson-Newman saw another save recorded by the defense as Naranjo saw her 89th minute shot cleared off the line by the defense.
The first overtime ended without much offense from either team, with the Wolves notching a pair of shots in the period. It was the second overtime period where the Wolves saw a cross blocked and fall to the feet of Sager (Saugus, Calif.), who in the 102nd minute beat McKenna with a shot for her second goal of the season.
Newberry outshot Carson-Newman 18-15 during the match. Naranjo took five shots in the match and placed four on frame, while Sager took five and placed three on frame including the game winning goal.
