CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Another hard fought South Atlantic Conference match evaded the Newberry Wolves, as the host Queens University Royals took the match three sets to one (25-11, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18) in the Levine Center on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry falls to 10-7 overall and 5-6 in SAC play. The Wolves will host Wingate on Friday October 18th at 7 p.m.
Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) led the Wolves with 10 kills. Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) had nine kills and was a part of five blocks. Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) had a double-double dishing out 16 assists and racking up 10 digs, while adding a service ace. Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) passed out 14 assists along with a pair of service aces.
Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) led the Wolves defensively with 14 digs and also added two service aces.
The Wolves battled back from a 7-1 deficit in the first set to cut the lead to 10-6. The Royals then proceeded to go on a 15-5 run to win the set 25-11. Freshman Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) led the Wolves with three kills and no errors to hit .500. King had two kills in three attempts for a .667 hitting percentage.
The Wolves saw a 17-15 lead in the second set slip away as they were plagued by a couple of late errors. The Wolves took an 11-9 lead forcing Queens to call a timeout. After the timeout, the lead quickly jumped out to 15-11 forcing another Royal timeout. Queens then took a 22-19 lead. The Wolves furiously fought back to 24-22, before Brittany Barren closed out the set. Soper would lead the Wolves with five kills and four digs in the set.
Newberry was able to hold off the Royals in the third set, riding a four point surge after being tied at 19-all, to take the set 25-20. King led the Wolves offensively with four kills, while Soper and Holly Brisson (Lumberton, N.C.) had three apiece. Stokes and Moran each had five digs in the set. The Wolves hit .150 in the set, compared to Queens' .132.
Errors inundated the Wolves in the fourth set. Newberry held on tight as it cut down a 14-7 lead to 22-18, but the Royals were able to pull out the win 25-18. Newberry committed 10 errors in the set, while only amassing 5 kills.
