Box Score FLORENCE - The Newberry Wolves volleyball team got off to its first 4-0 start since 2007 with a 25-16, 24-26, 25-19, 25-9 win over the Pfeiffer Falcons in the final match of the 2012 Francis Marion Invitational on Saturday evening.
Newberry will host Lander at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the home opener before traveling to St. Petersburg, Fla., for the Eckerd College Classic next weekend.
Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) had her third double-double of the weekend with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) followed her with six kills. Setters Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) and Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) were effective once again with Moran handing out 17 assists and Browning dishing out 14.
Newberry wasted no time getting out to a first set lead, scoring 12 of the first 14 points on the way to a 12-2 advantage. Pfeiffer couldn't manage to bring the deficit to within fewer than eight points as the Wolves rolled. Parrish had three kills and Alexus Horton (Austin, Texas) put away two kills in the set as Newberry hit .240 and Pfeiffer hit -.031.
Brittany Tolbert (Mount Airy, N.C.) had four kills in the second set, as the Falcons held closer. Newberry had three set points before PU tied the set at 24-all before kills by Parrish and Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) threw down kills to give Newberry the set win.
Pfeiffer took advantage of a 6-0 start in the third set to roll to a 25-19 third set as Newberry hit only .114, but the Wolves responded with a vengeance, hitting .250 with a 16-1 run after trailing 6-5 on the way to the set and match victory.
