Wolves sweep USC Aiken to start Saturday action

FLORENCE - The Newberry Wolves moved to 3-0 on the young season with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-20 sweep of USC Aiken in their third match of the FMU Invitational at the Smith University Center on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry closes action with a match against Pfeiffer at 7 p.m. tonight.

Madison Schultz (Bellmont, Ind.) hit a stellar .467 with eight kills and only one error on 15 attempts. Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) had her second consecutive double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs and Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had eight kills and eight digs.

The first set started off fairly even before a 5-0 run aided by back-to-back aces from Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) put the Wolves up 16-11. The Pacers got to within one point at 23-22 when Newberry took a timeout and claimed the two points following to get the first set. Parrish had four kills and Prachar had three as the Wolves hit .028 better than USCA.

Newberry's hitting improved in the second set, as the scarlet and gray notched a .268 hitting percentage and dug out 19 Pacer attacks on the way to a 2-0 lead. Newberry trailed in the middle of the set, but a 6-0 surge but the Wolves up 17-16. Another 4-0 run later on in the set pushed the Wolves to the decisive advantage. Four kills from Parrish and three apiece from Prachar and Schultz led the offense.

The third and clinching set saw Newberry notch 26 digs and a pair of aces to claim the set despite hitting only .120. Early on it was a 5-0 Newberry surge which gave the scarlet and gray the push. Newberry led by as many as seven points before a 25-20 set win gave the Wolves their second sweep of the season. Parrish and Schultz each had four kills in the set.

Libero Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had 12 digs, while at setter Moran passed out 16 assists and Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) had 12.
