NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry women's tennis team had its season ended in a 6-3 defeat to Brevard College at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
The Wolves opened the afternoon by honoring lone senior Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.). Simmons was a three-year member of the Newberry women's tennis team after transferring to Newberry following a season at Spartanburg Methodist College.
The final match of the regular season for both the Wolves (13-10, 4-5 SAC) and the Tornados (12-9, 5-4 SAC) served as a deciding match for a berth in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. In the end it was Brevard that secured a spot in the tournament.
The Wolves fell behind early as the Tornados cruised to a pair of victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, following a Newberry victory at No. 3 opened the match. At No. 3 sophomores Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) ran away from the Tornados No. 3 pairing in an 8-2 victory.
Newberry picked up its first of two singles victories when up 5-0 in set one, sophomore Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) was handed a default victory at No. 2 singles. The Wolves final point came at No. 6 singles where McManus earned a straight sets victory over Ana Drummond.
The Wolves finish the season 13-10 overall record, giving Newberry its best season since 2006-07 when Newberry finished the season 12-8 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
