SALISBURY, N.C. - For the second match in a row the Newberry women's tennis team picked up a South Atlantic Conference victory as the Wolves topped the Catawba Lady Indians 7-2 at the Johnson Tennis Center.
Newberry (13-7, 4-2 SAC) opened the afternoon with two points from doubles action as No. 1 tandem of sophomores Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) won by an impressive score of 8-1.
At No. 3, sophomores Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) edged their opponents for an 8-5 victory.
In singles action the Wolves dominated the Lady Indians winning five of the six matches. Aguirre and sophomore Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) earned the Wolves' first singles points at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Strong tallied a victory at No. 1 singles when she topped Catawba's Sloan Kessler in a second set tiebreak. At No. 4 singles freshman Emily Helsel (Port Orange, Fla.) won in straight sets, while McManus picked up a victory in two sets at No. 6 singles.
The Wolves will play host to Tusculum at the Cannon Tennis Courts at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
