NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry women's tennis team edged the Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters 5-4 thanks to a strong performances by sophomores Romina Adum and Marina Ziehe, who both picked up victories in singles and doubles action.

Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and freshman partner Emily Helsel (Port Orange, Fla.) won a tight doubles match at No. 2 with a score of 8-6. At No. 3 sophomores Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) picked up a quick 8-3 victory over their opponents.

The Wolves picked up their first singles point as Adum won 6-1 in set one at No. 3 singles. In the second set Adum was given victory as her opponent was forced to retire after Adum went up 1-0 early in the set.

In what turned out to be the longest match of the day, Aguirre came from behind to defeat Sofia Lopez Mimendi at No. 2 singles in three sets. Aguirre fell behind dropping a first set tiebreak, before cruising to a set two victory and earning a tiebreak win in the third set.

Newberry clinched the match when Ziehe won in straight sets at No. 5 singles.

Newberry is scheduled to travel to Catawba on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. meeting with the Lady Indians.
