Wolves swept by No. 12 Tusculum

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves were unable to grab a win in the Saturday doubleheader of their South Atlantic Conference series with the No. 12 Tusculum Pioneers, as the Pioneers earned 7-0 and 5-4 wins at Pioneer Park.

Newberry falls to 9-18 overall and 5-10 in SAC play, while the Pioneers are now 23-5 and 13-2 in the league. The Wolves return to action at Augusta State on Tuesday before closing out next week with four straight home games. Newberry hosts nationally-ranked USC Aiken on Wednesday evening before a SAC series against Lincoln Memorial on Friday and Saturday.

Game One: No. 12 Tusculum 7, Newberry 0
Two Tusculum homeruns put the game out of reach as the Wolves could only manage five hits in the first game of the doubleheader.

Newberry stranded runners in scoring position in the first and second innings, failing to capitalize on chances to take an early lead. Failing to jump on those chances would prove to be too much for the Wolves' chances to handle, as Tusculum starter Craig Goodman sat the scarlet and gray down in order in the third through seventh innings. Goodman allowed only four hits and struck out seven in eight innings.

Tusculum scored two runs in the third inning and two-run homers from Cody Coffman and Cade Stallings put the lead out of the Wolves' reach.

Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.; 3-2) went six innings in the start, allowing five runs on seven hits. No Newberry player had multiple hits and all five hits were singles.

Game Two: No. 12 Tusculum 5, Newberry 4
In a back-and-forth game, it was Tusculum's three-run fourth inning that was too much for the Wolves to overcome as the hosts finished off the series sweep.

An RBI single in the bottom of the first by Aaron Guinn and Alexi Colon's inside the park homerun put the Pioneers out to an early 2-0 lead.

Newberry answered by taking the lead in the second on Hunter Cox's (Andrews, S.C.) RBI double, a run-scoring single by Matt Gaine (Goshen, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.).

Colon opened TC's three run inning in the fourth with his second homer of the game and Tripper Crisson's two-run single put the Pioneer's back out to a 5-3 lead.

Rufus was able to reach on a fielder's choice in the fifth and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He narrowed the lead to 5-4 when he scored from third on a wild pitch. Unfortunately though, the Wolves could not get a runner past second base in the last two innings to drop the game.

No Newberry player had multiple hits in the game, with Cox's double going as the only extra base hit in the game for the Wolves. Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 2-3) was tagged with the loss allowing four runs on four hits in three innings. Newberry relief allowed only one run, with Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.) allowing no runs in two innings to keep his ERA at 0.00 for the year.
