Box Score BANNER ELK, N.C. - After leading by a goal early, the Newberry women's lacrosse team fell behind Lees-McRae and was unable to complete a comeback as the Bobcats held on for an 11-8 victory at Tate Field.
The Bobcats (1-7) opened the scoring almost two minutes into the game before Newberry (1-5) freshman Meg Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) drew a free position opportunity 7:21 into the first half. On the free position attempt Kenny tied the game up at 1-1.
Two minutes later Kenny scored again off an assist from freshman Becca Eddy (Eugene, Ore.). Back-to-back Lees-McRae goals were countered by Eddy's first goal of the season 18 minutes into the game.
The Bobcats scored three straight heading to halftime with a 6-3 lead.
Returning from the break it was Newberry senior Kristin Stensholt (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) who found the back of the net on a free position opportunity 35 seconds into the second period. After Lees-McRae tallied a pair, Newberry cut the Bobcats lead to 8-5 on Tessa Davis' second goal of the year.
Lees-McRae answered Davis' goal before freshman Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) scored on a free position shot. Newberry continued to climb back into the game as the deficit was cut to one goal after Kenny scored on back-to-back Newberry possessions giving her a four goal afternoon.
Three straight goals by the Bobcats wrapped up the Wolves' second road trip as a program.
Kenny tallied four goals to lead the Wolves, while Eddy recorded Newberry's sole assist. Thomas led the Wolves with seven ground balls and Stensholt's three draw controls were a team high. Newberry keeper Sam Capers (Monroe Township, N.J.) recorded 14 saves in the loss.
Newberry returns home on March 23 as the Wolves play host to the Catawba Lady Indians.
