Box Score NEWBERRY - Newberry freshman Nikki Colwell recorded the second four-goal game of her career, while fellow freshman Sam Capers made 20 saves in goal as the Wolves fell to the visiting Shepherd University Rams 23-7.
Shepherd (6-0) opened its account a little over a minute into the game, as the Rams scored four straight before Newberry (1-3) tacked on its first goal of the game just under five minutes in. After freshman Meg Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) controlled a draw, the ball found its way to Colwell (Greer, S.C.) who found the back of the net for the Wolves' opening tally.
Newberry added a second goal with about five minutes remaining in the opening period as Kenny posted her third tally of the season to cut the Rams' lead to 9-2. At 29:16 Newberry senior Kristin Stensholt (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) drew a Shepherd foul and converted on a free position shot for her third goal of the year.
Returning from the halftime break down 9-3, Newberry surrendered four straight Shepherd goals before Colwell scored for the second time on the afternoon ten minutes into the second period. Down 18-4, the Wolves added a fifth goal when Colwell scored for the third time nearly 21 minutes into the second half.
Newberry freshman Elise Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) did everything on her own at 21:22 when she controlled a draw, drew a foul and scored her first career goal to put the Wolves behind 18-6.
After Sanchez created her own opportunity, Colwell controlled the following draw and did the same scoring her fourth of the game and 12th of the season.
Colwell's final goal was also the last time Newberry found the back of the net against Shepherd, falling behind 23-7 before time expired giving the Rams the victory.
Capers (Monroe Township, N.J.) recorded 20 saves on the day, while Sanchez and sophomore Tricia Powell (Monroe Township, N.J.) led the Wolves with three ground balls each.
Newberry returns to Setzler Field on Thursday at 7 p.m., when the Wolves play host to Shippensburg.
