ANDERSON, S.C. - In a low scoring affair the Wolves were topped 59-44 Wednesday night at Anderson University, despite seven rebound games by both freshman Haylee Lepaio and junior Neicey Lewis.
Newberry (12-9, 7-6 South Atlantic Conference) trailed much of the first half before the Trojans (9-12, 6-7 SAC) surrendered their lead with 5:34 on the clock. After the Trojans and Wolves exchanged misses on both sides of the court the Wolves took a 13-12 lead on a jumper by sophomore Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia). Gleeson followed her jumper up with another on the following possession putting the Wolves up by five with less than five minutes remaining in the half. The Newberry lead was short-lived as the Trojans rode a 9-0 run into the locker room at halftime.
Gleeson led the Wolves at half with six points, while Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) led with five rebounds.
The second half belonged to the Trojans who jumped out to a 10-point lead with 16:53 on the clock. The Trojans saw their largest lead of the evening at 8:02 when an Alissa Diaz jumper put Anderson up by 17 points.
Newberry cut the Trojans lead down, but was unable to overcome the double-digit deficit as Anderson walked away with a 15-point victory.
Gleeson and freshman Zara Pearson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia) led Newberry with nine points, while Lewis and Lepaio tallied seven rebounds each.
Newberry returns home to Eleazer Arena on Saturday, when the Wolves host Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m.
