PEMBROKE, N.C. - The second-ranked Newberry Wolves raced out to an early lead and won seven of 10 bouts in a 33-9 victory over the UNC Pembroke Braves at the English Jones Center to move to 16-1 in dual action this season.
The dual victory ensures the Wolves one of the top two season in program history in terms of winning percentage. A win in next Wednesday's dual at Anderson will wrap up the top winning percentage in school history.
Newberry's 16th dual win of the season puts the Wolves in the top seven programs in the nation regardless of division in terms of dual wins.
The Wolves got off to a 12-0 start thanks to forfeit victories by Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) at 125 lbs. and DJ Jules (Greenville, S.C.) at 133 lbs.
No. 4 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) pushed the dual lead to 18-0 at 141 lbs. with a pin of Daniel Ownbey at the 2:45 mark.
No. 8 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) moved to 17-0 in dual action on the season at 149 lbs. with a 10-4 decision over Kristoff Thomas to make it a 21-0 lead, and Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned a 9-1 major decision over KD Dixon at 157 lbs. to make it a 25-0 lead at the halfway point.
The highlight match of the evening went to the Braves, as No. 4 Mike Williams took a 6-0 decision over No. 6 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) to narrow the lead to 25-3.
No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) clinched the dual victory with a 16-1 technical fall over Jake Ferguson making Newberry's advantage to 30-3.
UNC Pembroke got late wins at 184 and 197 lbs. to narrow the decision. Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) took injury time at the end of regulation with the score tied at 1-all, giving choice to Shiheem Bryant. Bryant took the defensive position and got an escape near the edge in sudden victory to earn a 2-1 decision at 184. A 3-2 tiebreaker victory by UNCP's No. 8 Shane Nolan over Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) cut the lead to 30-9.
No. 5 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) got a late takedown to close out the dual with a 3-1 decision over James De La Riva.
