NEWBERRY, S.C. - The second ranked Newberry Wolves wrapped up an undefeated season of home duals on Friday night with a 43-3 walloping of Belmont Abbey, with four wins coming by bonus point victories.
The Wolves celebrated the careers of Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.), Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.), Channon Clamp (Gilbert, S.C.), Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.), Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.), Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.), Steven McLeod (Gilbert, S.C.), Dave Newman (Toms River, N.J.), Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) and Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at the match's halfway point.
Newberry moves to 15-1 in duals this season and hosts the Newberry Open on Saturday.
The Wolves didn't even have to take to the mats to take the lead with Cronin at 125 lbs. and DJ Jules at 133 lbs. picking up victories by forfeit to give the hosts an early 12-0 lead.
Fourth-ranked BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) pushed the lead to 18-0 at 141 lbs. with a pin of Jake Nelson at the 1:58 mark.
The No. 8 149 lbs. wrestler in the nation - Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) - moved to an outstanding 16-0 in duals this year with a 12-4 major decision over Nick Sgroi to push the lead to 22-0. The Abbey took its only bout of the doul with a 4-0 decision by Brandon Wilkins over Hunter Robinson (Opelika, Ala.) to make it a 22-3 match at the halfway point.
Newberry won the final five bouts of the dual, starting with a 5-0 decision by No. 6 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) over Joseph Maumoynier at 165 lbs. to make the lead 25-3.
No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) pinned Ryan Gregory at the 2:17 mark of the 174 lbs. bout to clinch the dual victory at a 31-3 margin. Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) earned a 7-0 decision over Jerami Bartley at 184 lbs. to push the lead to 34-3.
A pair of seniors closed out their Eleazer Arena careers in perfect fashion, as Reed earned a 7-5 decision over Nick Rees at 197 lbs. and Elkins pinned Will Robinson at the 1:48 mark of the heavyweight bout to close out the dominating win.
