Wolves continue hot streak with 9-0 win at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. - Impressive performances throughout the lineup led the Newberry women's tennis team to its fifth sweep of the season and first victory of conference play in a 9-0 win over Lenoir-Rhyne.

After struggling in doubles play only a day earlier, the Wolves cruised through doubles action beginning with an 8-0 win at No. 1 by the sophomore pairing of Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.). Newberry continued with an 8-2 win at No. 2 by sophomores Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Marina Ziehe (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and an 8-3 victory at No. 3 by senior Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) and freshman Emily Helsel (Port Orange, Fla.).

In singles play the Wolves took all six matches from the Bears in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles by sophomore Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.).

Reigning SAC Player of the Week, Aguirre, improved to 10-0 in singles play on the season.

Newberry next plays on March 2, in Orangeburg, S.C. against South Carolina State. The match with the Bulldogs is scheduled to begin at noon.
