NEWBERRY, S.C. - Strong play at the first three singles positions was not enough for the Newberry women's tennis team after falling behind 3-0 at the completion of doubles action, as the North Georgia Saints escaped Newberry with a 6-3 victory at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
Dropping all three doubles points, the Wolves (2-3) countered the Saints (4-0) with victories at the first three singles spots. Sophomores Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) and Susana Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won comfortably at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, with Strong edging Natalia Escobar 6-2, 6-3.
Aguirre upped her perfect record to 5-0 with a straight sets win over Juliana Chiang.
Romina Adum (Guayaquil, Ecuador) fell behind after her first set with Audrey Marlette, but the sophomore fought back to win the next two sets. Adum improves to 4-1 on the season with her victory.
The Newberry women have a quick turnaround from Monday afternoon's meeting with North Georgia, as the Wolves travel to Columbia College at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
