Wolves dominate doubleheader sweep of Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Newberry College softball team moved to 4-0 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of the Shaw University Bears at the Walnut Creek Complex on Saturday. The Wolves won the opening game 16-4 and led the nightcap 20-1 in the second inning before winning by forfeit.

Newberry moves to 4-0 on the season entering Sunday's home doubleheader against Coker (2-2), which is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

In the opener, the Wolves rebounded from an early deficit and piled on the offense to pull out the 16-4 win. Shaw's Courtnee Kelly and Kemesha Braithewaite hit RBI singles in the third inning to start the scoring and a two-run homerun by Ashley Roof (Columbia, S.C.) tied the game in the top of the fourth. A Chelsea Holliday homer in the bottom of the frame gave Shaw a brief 3-2 lead.

Monica Buccellato (Martinez, Calif.) and Hailey Harris (Rougemont, N.C.) hit consecutive two-run singles to push the lead to 6-3 in the fifth, and a three-run bomb by Gwenell Crawford (Yulee, Fla.) in the sixth made it a 9-3 game.

Lindsay Workman (Aiken, S.C.), Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) all hit RBI doubles before a Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, Fla.) two-run double and Jada Crocker (Gaffney, S.C.) RBI single wrapped up the Wolves' scoring.

In the second game, Newberry led 20-1 in the top of the second before the Shaw coach pulled her team from the field to give Newberry a 7-0 forfeit win. Before the game was called, Stevens and Workman each had four RBIs and Crawford had driven in three. Statistics from the forfeited game do not count.
