Newberry Softball dropped both games of Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader at Augusta, falling 1-0 in the opener and 12-7 in game two. The Wolves showed signs of life with a four-run sixth in game two, but a fast start from the Jaguars proved too much to overcome.
Game One: Newberry 0, Augusta 1
Lindsey Foster delivered a strong outing in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on five hits while striking out three in a complete-game effort. The lone run scored in the third inning after a fielding error allowed Augusta to score on a big opportunity.
Haidyn Campbell led Newberry with a 2-for-4 day, while Maddy Staples reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Leah Evans, Ella Stone, Christine Butler, and Payton Little each added hits, in the loss.
Defensively, the Wolves committed four errors, including the one that led to Augusta's only run. Foster and the Newberry defense worked out of multiple jams, including a bases-loaded situation in the third.
Game Two: Newberry 7, Augusta 12
Newberry fell behind early in game two as Augusta scored in four of the six innings and totaled 12 runs on 14 hits. The Wolves rallied with a two-run fifth and a four-run sixth to cut the deficit to 10-7, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 12-7 loss.
Little provided a huge punch to Augusta, blasting a grand slam and finishing 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI. Leah Evans went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Maddy Staples (2-run Home Run) and Christine Butler each put runs in for the Wolves.Â
Newberry falls to 22-30 on the season heading into the final stretch of the regular season in a SAC doubleheader to finish up the regular season, on the road against Tusculum at 1pm and 3pm.
