NEWBERRY, S.C. - Despite wins from sophomores Susana Aguirre and Ariel Strong in both doubles and singles action, the Newberry women's tennis team was knocked of 5-3 by the visiting Lander Bearcats.
Lander (1-0) opened the afternoon taking two points in doubles, while Newberry's (1-1) only victory in doubles action came at No. 1. In the No. 1 doubles match Aguirre (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) topped Aurelia Ruffat and Cayce Bradley 8-2.
Newberry also earned points at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
In the No. 1 singles match it was Strong who defeated Ruffat 6-3, 6-1. Aguirre earned two set victory over Eliza Adusumilli 6-2, 6-2.
Newberry's No. 6 singles player sophomore Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) was in a tie-break battle with Lori Flick before the match was called due to rain.
The Wolves have a quick turnaround as they play host to UNC Pembroke on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
