Fifth-seeded Wolves swept from SAC Tournament semifinals by top-seed Wingate

BREVARD, N.C. - The fifth-seeded Newberry Wolves were swept from the semifinals of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament by the first-seeded Wingate Bulldogs (25-20, 25-17, 25-15) in Boshamer Gym on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Newberry's record stands at 18-14 and the Wolves will await the decision of the NCAA selection committee to see if they will advance to the national tournament for the second straight season. That announcement will be made at NCAA.com at 10 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.

The Wolves' offense struggled to find rhythm all day, hitting just minus-.034 in the match, with no player earning more than five kills. Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had 14 digs in the match as Newberry's only double-digit defensive effort.

The first set was a battle throughout, and Newberry was within two points at 22-20 before Wingate put away the final three points to close out the set. Wingate hit .333 in the set tpo Newberry's .091, though the Wolves' Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) had three kills without an error in the set, while Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) also had three kills.

The second set saw the Bulldogs make a strong run to get out to a 19-9 lead. Newberry got back to within six points twice, but Wingate kept the pressure up and took the 2-0 lead. Newberry hit minus-.108 in the set with Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) and Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each notching two kills.

Wingate went on a 5-0 run early in the third set to get out to a 12-3 lead and despite Newberry's best efforts, the Wolves could get no closer than within eight points the rest of the way. Newberry once again hit minus-.108, while Wingate hit .300.
