WINGATE, N.C. - Despite a second half goal from sophomore Gabrielle Brodie, the Newberry women's soccer team saw its season ended after dropping a 4-1 decision to Wingate in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Newberry (7-8-4) was done in by the 2012 SAC Player of the Year Jade Montgomery, as Wingate (14-1-1) saw Montgomery record a hat trick in the Bulldogs victory.

Montgomery opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a headed goal to put Wingate up by one, which would wind up the score at halftime. Montgomery headed in the eventual game winner in the 50th minute of the match.

In the 54th Danielle Cremmen scored for Wingate, before Montgomery finished the hat trick in the 63rd on a third header goal.

It wasn't until the 73rd minute, that Newberry was able to avoid the shutout as Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) collected a through ball from senior Tiffany Kinner (North Myrtle Beach, N.C.) and slotted a shot inside the far post. Brodie's goal was the tenth of the season for the 2012 All-SAC First Team selection.

Brodie's strike moves her to No. 7 all-time in career goals at Newberry with 15, No. 9 in career points with 33 and into a tie for No. 10 in single season goals scored. Kinner's assist was her third of her career.

The Wolves were outshot 24-9, while Wingate also held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. Newberry's starting goalkeeper Morgan Cox (Perth, Western Australia, Australia) recorded six saves, while backup keeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) stopped a pair of shots in the match.

Newberry finishes the season 7-8-4 and 2-4-3 in conference play. The Wolves reached the South Atlantic Conference tournament for the 16th straight season and saw a pair of student-athletes earn All-SAC First Team honors in Brodie and senior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.).
