Box Score GREENWOOD - The Newberry Wolves volleyball team saw a four-match winning streak snapped at the hands of the Lander Bearcats, who took a 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22) win in Finis Horne Arena on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, Newberry is now 12-10 on the season and Lander is 9-10. Newberry is on the road for two South Atlantic Conference matches at Carson-Newman on Friday and at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) led the Wolves with 11 kills, while Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) had a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 31 digs. Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) passed out 38 assists and had 12 digs and Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had 27 digs.
The opening set was tight from the start, as there were 19 ties and nine lead changes in the set. Neither squad was even able to pull out to a two-point advantage until a 16-14 Lander lead. Newberry fought back to take the lead with four straight points to take an 18-16 lead. The teams stayed neck and neck with Newberry at set point at 24-23, but the Bearcats blocked three consecutive attacks to earn the 26-24 set win. Parrish had five kills and Soper had three, but the Wolves hit only .069 in the set.
In the second set, Newberry swung away to jump out to a 7-2 lead which the Wolves would not relinquish. Newberry had set point at 24-17 before the Bearcats rattled off five straight points to force a Newberry timeout. Coming out of the timeout, a Lander attack error handed the Wolves the 25-22 set win and tied the match at one set apiece. Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Soper each had four kills in the set and Parrish and Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each had a service ace.
The Wolves scored the first three points of the third set, but Lander scored 10 of the next 13 points to take a 10-6 lead and force a Newberry timeout. The Wolves continued to battle throughout the set to narrow the deficit, but could not get closer than two points as Lander had a 2-1 lead after a 25-20 set win. The Wolves hit only .032 and no player had more than two kills in the set.
Another tight set in the fourth set was broken open by a 9-1 Lander run. Newberry led 9-7 before the run, but came out staring at a 16-10 deficit. The Wolves were able to break the lead down to two points, but the hosts pulled away each time. Newberry had the deficit down to 24-22, but an attack error by the Wolves handed the Bearcats the victory. King, Parrish and Soper each had three kills in the set and the Wolves had three of their eight blocks in the set.
