Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves were able to ring the Victory Bell on Homecoming day with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 sweep of Brevard in Eleazer Arena on Saturday. Newberry has now won four straight and five of its last six matches.
The Wolves are now 12-9 overall and 6-5 in South Atlantic Conference play entering a three-match road trip next week. Brevard is now 7-11 overall and 1-9 overall.
Newberry hit .302 in the match and held the Tornados to a minus-.019 percentage. Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) led Newberry with 10 kills and Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had 14 digs. Newberry had 10 blocks in the sweep, with Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) chipping in on six. Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) hit .533 with eight error-free kills.
The first set started off tight and was tied as late as 9-all before the Wolves pulled away. From a 9-7 BC lead, Newberry wen ont a 5-0 run to go up 12-9. The Wolves continued their assault and scored 10 of the next 14 points to get to 22-13 and then cruise to the set win. Newberry hit .286 in the set with only one error, while Brevard had 12 errors and hit only minus-.056. Prachar and Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) each had three kills in the set.
Parrish and Prachar led the hot-hitting Wolves in the second set as Newberry was not truly challenged in the set. The Wolves hit a scorching .382 with only two errors, with Parrish earning five kills and Prachar putting away four kills as the scarlet and gray cruised to a 25-14 set win.
The Tornados stunned Newberry by scoring the first seven points of the third set and the Wolves had already called their final timeout of the set when they trailed 14-7. But the hosts went on a tear, with Blair Browning (New Leixngton, Ohio) serving on eight straight points as the scarlet and gray had tied the set back up at 16-all. The teams were still tied as late as 19-all, but Newberry scored six of the final seven points to earn the sweep. Newberry hit .235 in the set with Brittany Tolbert (Mount Airy, N.C.) had four kills to lead the squad.
