Box Score ANDERSON, S.C. - Samantha Parrish sparkled on Newberry's side of the net with a 20-kill, 12-dig performance but the Wolves dropped the final three sets in a 3-2 (6-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-12) loss to Anderson in its South Atlantic Conference opener on Wednesday evening.
The sensational sophomore has 77 kills and two 20-kill matches in five matches this season. She continued her torrid pace today leading the Wolves came out with a vengeance. A 6-0 run after dropping the first point gave the Wolves (3-2, 0-1 SAC) a 6-1 lead. Newberry quickly followed that with another 6-0 run. Parrish (Angola, Ind.) then led a 7-0 run blasting three aces by the Trojans defense helping the Wolves to a 25-6 set one win.
Newberry didn't let up in set two. Parrish led the team with five kills in 13 attempts in the set while freshman Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had three of her 10 kills in the set. Sophomore Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) added three kills of her own and finished the match with eight, a season high.
While it looked as if Newberry was in command of the match the Trojans (1-4, 1-0 SAC) had other plans. Anderson started the set out on a 10-4 run and the Wolves never recovered. Parrish's kill put the Wolves within three but Anderson's Joy Hiller put the next point away to get Anderson on the board.
The Wolves dropped set four by the same 25-22 score to go to the decisive fifth set.
Parrish and Prachar, Newberry's two top attackers, were held to two kills in 20 attempts in the fifth set. The Wolves hit .000 as a team. Newberry never led in the set and fell 15-12.
Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) led the team with 27 digs while Prachar had 26.
