Box Score NEWBERRY - Despite a set piece goal from junior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.), the Newberry Wolves were handed their first loss of the 2011 season by dropping a 2-1 decision to USC Aiken.
The Pacers (2-0-0) struck first when Caroline Gillespie blasted a shot under the cross bar from 20 yards for her first goal of the season.
Early in the second half the Wolves drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box down the right side of the pitch. Senior Megan Douglas (Bradford, West Yorkshire, England) placed a cross off the set piece in front of USC Aiken keeper Alli Edens who thought she punched the ball to safety. The ball fell to Smith who put the ball into the goal off the half volley.
The Wolves and Pacers battled as the second half continued, but the ball eventually fell back to Gillespie's feet and found its way into the side netting from 25 yards out.
Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhoades recorded five saves in the match. Smith becomes the first Wolf to record points in multiple matches.
Next up for Newberry is a Wednesday afternoon tilt at Limestone. The Wolves meet Limestone at 2 p.m.
