Wolves fall to Mars Hill 3-1

Box Score

MARS HILL, N.C. - Newberry came roaring out the gates in the first set, but couldn't keep up the pace dropping the next three sets and the match 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20) to Mars Hill on Friday evening.

Sophomore Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) had five of her 17 kills to help the Wolves (7-8, 1-5 SAC) capture the set. Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) and Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each added four kills as the Wolves cruised through set one.

Unfortunately for Newberry, it couldn't continue its solid play in the second set. It was back and forth until Newberry self destructed late. Three attack errors led to a 5-0 run giving Mars Hill a 22-17 lead. Newberry couldn't recover falling 25-19.

Parrish dominated for the Wolves early in set three. The Indiana native accounted for four of the first six Newberry points in the set. After the Lions took a 9-8 lead, Newberry rattled off four straight points, three of which came on Prachar's serve. Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) heated up a little later. The freshman had six of her eight kills in set three. A Parrish kill put the Wolves up 21-20, but Mars Hill scored five of the next six points to take a 2-1 lead.

The Lions had blocks on consecutive points to go up 13-9 in the fourth set. The Wolves were resilient scoring the next five points on Chelsea Mayor's (Sugar Land, Texas) service turn. The last point came on an ace and forced a Mars Hill timeout. An Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) kill put the Wolves up 16-15, but that's the last lead they would see. The wheels proceeded to fall off as the squad committed three attacking errors and a ball handling error leading to eight straight Lions points.

Parrish finished with a match-high 17 kills while Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) finished with 25 digs. Prachar had 23 digs while Parrish added 21.

The Wolves return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Tusculum.
