Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team continued its hot start at the Francis Marion Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) win over Belmont Abbey Saturday morning.
The Wolves started the day right with four straight points highlighted by Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) kills to begin the match. After the solid run by Newberry, it turned in to a back-and-forth set. Belmont Abbey finally battled back to knot the game at 20 before the Wolves won five straight points to take the set. Two of sophomore Samantha Parrish's (Angola, Ind.) three kills in the set sparked the run. She finished with a team-high 12 kills.
"It was nice to come out ready to play in the first set," coach David Nicholson said. "After two big wins, there could have been a letdown, but we didn't allow that to happen."
A 7-2 run in the middle of the second set put Newberry up 19-12. The Wolves cruised with the lead the rest of the way. Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) set Prachar up for the final kill of the set in which the Wolves hit .433 as a team.
Prachar was the story of the third set with seven kills in eight attempts. Her efforts helped her to a .556 hitting percentage for the match. Prachar's last kill fueled an 8-2 run putting the Wolves up for good at 18-9.
"It was fun and a really good bonding experience for the team," Prachar said. "As the weekend went on we had better team chemistry. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."
Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) added 22 assists while Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) had 15. Senior Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) led the team with 16 digs.
