Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. - After being down 2-1 in the first half to Lincoln Memorial the Newberry women's soccer team battled in the second half and scored two timely goals to secure a victory in the conference opener.
The Wolves (4-1-0, 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) fell behind early as the Railsplitters (3-2, 0-1 SAC) notched a 7th minute goal off the foot of Sarah Taylor. Taylor's goal was followed up in the 31st minute when a Brittany Jenkins header on a corner kick found the back of the goal.
In the 37th minute Newberry kept strong possession of the ball down the right side of the pitch before junior Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.) split the LMU defense and found junior Tiffany Kinner (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) with a nifty pass. With the ball at her feet, Kinner squeezed a shot into the back of the net from a tight angle for her third goal of the season.
In the second half the Wolves took advantage of a counter attack as senior Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) slotted a pass to freshman Mary Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) who finished the play with a shot into the far corner of the goal. Stanton's 64th minute tally is the third of her career.
Just as the Railsplitters did in the first half, Newberry got the most out of a corner kick when Langdon delivered a corner that was met by an attacking junior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) who buried a shot into past LMU keeper Kayla Hanson. Smith's goal is her second of the season and came in the 84th minute.
Newberry's senior goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) recorded five saves as she earned her fourth victory of the season.
The Wolves hit the road again on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for a conference tilt at Anderson. Newberry will return home next Sunday for a non-conference match against Flagler.
