Newberry sweeps Brevard for first SAC victory of 2011

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves swept their third consecutive opponent and picked up their first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season with a win over Brevard College (-17, -21, -23) at Boshamer Gymnasium on Friday.

Newberry (6-4, 1-1 SAC) hit well in the first set and struggled through the second and third, but was able to pull out the win anyway. The Wolves close out their 11-match season opening road trip at Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Wolves jumped out to a big lead early in the match, getting out to a 6-1 advantage on Blair Browning's (New Lexington, Ohio) serve. Another surge late in the set gave Newberry its largest set win of the night. Newberry's best offensive set ended with a .269 hitting percentage and saw four kills apiece from Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.). Brevard was limited to a .037 hitting percentage in the set.

Newberry encountered a rash of poor hitting in the second set, as Brevard was able to get out to a 16-13 lead before a Newberry timeout. Later in the set, Lisa Ross (Bowling Green, Ky.) held serve for five points to keep Brevard from pulling away, and three straight service aces gave the Wolves a 21-19 lead they would not relinquish. Newberry was limited to a -.111 hitting percentage, but five service aces in the set pushed Newberry to the two sets to none lead.

In the third set, the teams went back and forth early before Newberry pulled away in the middle of the set. With Brevard holding a slight 9-8 lead, the Wolves scored 12 of the next 17 points to get out to a 21-13 lead. The Tornados wouldn't let the Wolves close the match out easily though, charging back to narrow the margin to a single point at 24-23, but a BC service error sealed the match in Newberry's favor.

For the match, Newberry hit .018, while Brevard hit .050. Parrish led the Wolves with 10 kills, while Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) kept the Wolves going while the hitting was down, earning 20 digs on defense. Ross led the squad with her three consecutive aces, and also earned seven digs, while Browning passed out 15 assists.
