Langdon's tally secures Wolves 2-1 win over Queens

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After a scoreless first half where Queens and Newberry traded possession the Wolves took advantage of two second half goals to knock off the Royals, 2-1.

Newberry (3-1-0) notched the first tally of the match in the 63rd minute when freshman Mary Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) recorded the second goal of her career. Having just returned to the pitch as a second half substitution, Stanton created an opportunity for herself after recovering a misplayed ball from Queens. The freshman dribbled through the Royals defense before beating the Queens (0-4-0) goalkeeper Kelsey Seretis one-on-one.

The Wolves did not have long to celebrate as Queens earned a corner kick and after Newberry keeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) cleared the initial attack Queens freshman Macie McGuffin slotted a one timer shot from 18 yards out into the goal. The Royals goal came in the 68th minute.

In the 79th minute senior Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) scored her first goal of the season when she put in a deflection inside the six-yard box.

The Royals battled on the offensive end as the clock expired, but the Wolves were able to run the final seconds off of the clock.

Newberry continues the 2011 season on Saturday, September 17, when it opens South Atlantic Conference play at Lincoln Memorial. The Wolves match with the Railsplitters is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m.
