Wolves crush Coker 3-0

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. - After three consecutive grueling five-set losses, Newberry made things easier on itself with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-16) drubbing of Coker at the USC Aiken Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

"It was nice that we played well and didn't have matches come down to the end," head coach David Nicholson said. "Our slew of options helped us finish off matches in the third set."

Leading Nicholson's plethora of options was freshman Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) who led the Wolves with 10 kills. The Indiana native was helped by her teammates' strong service game. Coker's defense could barely receive multiple sets opening the door for Schultz to slam home easy kills at the top of the net. She led the wolves hitting .588 and the Wolves hit .338 for the match.

Sophomore Samantha Parrish's (Angola, Ind.) serve left Coker clueless in the middle of set two. Parrish had three aces in the midst of leading the Wolves to 12 straight points. Newberry finished with a season-high nine aces in the match.

The incredible run increased the Newberry lead to 14-1. Parrish finished Coker off in the first set with Newberry's final two kills.

The Wolves were able finish, something they haven't done well at this week. Coker played its best set of the match taking a 9-8 lead, but Newberry answered going on a 17-7 run to close Coker out.

"We went up two sets and finished the match out in three," Nicholson said. "It's important to not let up on teams. I'm hoping this is a sign of us maturing as a team."

Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) led the Wolves with 15 assists while Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) added nine. Freshman Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had a team high 10 digs.
